Reducing dust levels

  • Seal clothes you don't use frequently - As fibers age they may dislodge and become airborne, contributing to dust. Further, dust in the air may settle on clothes and then become airborne again when the clothes are moved. Jackets may be sealed in zippered suit bags. Foldable items can be stored in plastic storage bins.
  • Bathe frequently - In most environments the largest contributors of allergen producing dust are people and pets. Frequent bathing for both animals and family members will mean dander is washed down the drain instead of winding up in the air.
  • Change towels frequently - When towels are used they rub against the skin and collect dander. This may become airborne later as the towel is dried and reused.
  • Dampen the lint screen before cleaning - Keep a spray bottle handy and give the screen a few shots before removing the lint. Remove the lint slowly and put in a sealed container.
  • Get a HEPA air filter for your heating/cooling system - If you have a forced air heating/cooling system, a HEPA filter will reduce 90+ percent of dust that passes through the system. Change according to the manufacturers instructions.
  • Use a HEPA vacuum - Regular vacuums only filter out larger particles. Smaller ones, including dust mite debris, are simply blown out again. A good quality HEPA vacuum cleaner will trap dust inside the device and keep it from reentering the home.
  • Use electrostatic dusters - Electrostatic dusters trap dust rather than simply wiping it off. A damp cloth or sponge can also be used, just be sure to rinse frequently. Never use a feather duster! These simply redistribute the dust back into the air.
  • Keep your windows closed - It may be nice to get fresh air in the summer, but chances are - if you follow the above guidelines - there is more dust outside than in your home.
